There is almost too much to talk regarding the setting of Tales of The Abyss. The story follows Luke fon Fabre, who is not everything he initially appears, even to himself. What the player and party find out eventually is that Luke is Auldrant's version of a clone, of Asch who is the real Luke fon Fabre. As the reasons for why Asch was cloned come to light and this grows into secrets behind the primary religion on Auldrant; the Order of Lorelei.

Asch's personal backstory

PERSONALITY:

Asch is a constant foil to Luke throughout the game, right down to the fact that while Luke undergoes constant growth and development, Asch remains largely static throughout the narrative. This is for many reasons outside of a meta purpose, a primary one being that he received a full childhood, though that childhood was mostly full of neglect by his father as he was labeled to die thanks to the Score. A lot of development points resulted in Asch becoming a very cold person despite the efforts of his mother to help nurture him.

Said efforts were ultimately in vain as Asch was abducted by Van to subvert the Score and try to change the projected course of Auldrant. While this sounded like a noble enough effort, it resulted in Asch being taken from his home and essentially replaced. Despite the Replica Luke not knowing anything about his life, no one questioned it, especially not his father as "Luke fon Fabre" was still intended to die and his father was very adept at playing the games of Nobility. This resulted in Asch becoming extremely cold and seemingly arrogant. The party initially views him as irrationally angry as he holds deep-seated resentment against the Replica that took his life. Part of his coldness comes from his relationship with his father, but part of it is managing his emotions as despite the prediction he would die, Asch was being groomed to succeed the throne of Kimlasca eventually. This ties in to his complicated relationship with Natalia, as they were betrothed. Asch had genuinely fallen in love with her and made a promise to turn the country around so the poor would no longer be poor, and to put an end to the war with Malkuth. This idealism persists in some form throughout Asch's appearances in the game as he's working actively to stop Van, and fulfill his promise.

At some point in the game, Asch is formally accepted, alongside the Replica Luke to his chagrin by his parents. While this is a small form of comfort, it hardly in his mind makes up for the suffering he endured during the interim when he played at being Van's pawn. This leads into speaking on Asch's patience and perhaps acting ability as he pushed his emotions inward to appear perfectly subservient to Van to get into his graces and be more than just a tool that had no insight to his plans. He managed this despite being an extremely prideful person and kept up this charade until he finally had an opportunity to confront Luke in person for the first time, his pride as a person and the Original Luke fon Fabre coming to a head. While Van's machinations have instilled a hatred of all Replicas in Asch, a special disgust for Luke always rears itself in his presence. A part of it comes from Asch's pride in himself and his upbringing as Luke is painfully inept at most things in life that Asch mastered if only because he had nothing but time, while Luke was instead pampered and sheltered to keep him safe for his intended place in the Score.

Asch's pride in himself is perhaps one of the few driving forces that helps him to do his role in advancing the plot, as he is too prideful to ask for help, or share his knowledge with the party at several key points, and lends to his projected appearance in interactions with everyone save Natalia as he's mostly very conservative with his words and thoughts. With Natalia, he's slightly more honest, yet he also feels shame in that his life was stolen and that as he was so easily replaced he's not necessarily worth her affections, and again perhaps because of his pride doesn't completely reciprocate her proclamations of love. However Asch definitely does not refuse them, either. Likely it was instead a reason for Asch to strive to go further and try to see what of his life he could reclaim. In his abrupt and aloof way, Asch pursued this down to helping collect medicine for his mother to help with her illness, brushing it off as "just happening to be in the area".

Continuing to his end, Asch recognizes Luke is the best chance to defeat Van, and while fully intending to survive to the end made a calculated sacrifice of himself to give the party a chance to success. His pride comes to bear a final time as he declares himself Luke fon Fabre as he faces down scores of Oracle Knights. At his moment of death, Asch does finally accept Luke, leaving the rest up to him, in his own words.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Asch is a skilled swordsman, using the Albert Style, which is mentioned several times to focus more on strike strength and defense rather than agility. Asch is also a skiled Fonist, which is the equivalent of a magician in the setting. Using four of the six known elements. Asch is also a Seventh Fonist, and while he has not had formal training in it can make use of healing Fonic Artes should he take the time to learn. He is also capable of creating Hyperresonance without another Seventh Fonist present, an ability that is unique to himself and Luke. It serves almost no purpose in battle as it takes concentration and is difficult to control, but Asch can use it to both create and destroy matter.
